When square foot gardening, you are going to have to plan out what you want to plant, how much room the plants will need to grow and leave room for rows where you can walk between the plants so that you can water and care for them.

Once the soil is completely turned in your large garden, you need to rake it so that it is level.  You will then want to add some top soil and fertilizer to the mix to make sure that the garden is ready to receive plants.

Do not make the mistake of many beginning gardeners and jam more plants than your garden can accommodate.  Tomato plants, for example, may start out small but grow tall and need space.  You should count on at least three to four feet for each plant.  Of course, different plants grow differently.  Rooting vegetable such as carrots and turnips may need a little less room.  However, you have to make sure that each plant has enough room to grow and for the roots to sprout.  If you jam too many plants into a garden, you are going to end up wasting your time as it will fail to thrive. Also make sure that you leave room for walking so that you can properly tend to the garden and, if applicable, harvest any vegetables or fruits that grow in the garden.   Do not cluster everything together so that there is no room to move as your plants will get trampled every time you go to water them  or some may be neglected as you try to avoid stepping on any of the plants.  This may seem like common sense, but it is a common mistake that many beginning gardeners make.
Make sure that you have the proper large gardening supplies that you will need for square foot gardening.  This includes a hoe, rake, spade and a wheelbarrow.  The wheelbarrow will be used to transport the plants and materials to the garden.


When square foot gardening, plan out the garden before you begin and get the entire family involved.  If you are planning a large foot gardening and need to cut out an area of the lawn, you are better off to rent a machine to do this rather than use a spade to do this by hand as it will take you all day.  Once the soil is ready, the entire family can enjoy planting their favorite plants in the garden and tending to them.
