Container Gardening

Container Gardening is the best way to grow vegetables, flowers, and herbs, especially if you have limited space.  You can use containers for perennials like Roses and for miniature trees like Bonsai.

Container gardening has become very popular with folks who live in the city or are limited for space.  Many people are choosing to grow their own herbs, which can be easily grown inside a home or an apartment by using container gardening  You can also grow flowers and some vegetables in containers.

In some cases, people want to grow plants or flowers from seeds and then transplant the plant into the ground so that it will continue to grow.  If you are planning on planting anything into the ground from a seed, you are wise to use container gardening to get the plant growing.  In most areas, you will have to use container gardening as a cold frost that comes unseasonably late in the year might kill newly planted vegetables or flowers.

Some people use different size containers for container gardening until the plants are healthy enough to be replanted into the ground.  You might start out with a seed in a small container that sprouts and needs more room and has to be put into a bigger container.

Plants that are used in container gardening are either seeds that will be transplanted into the earth when they have sprouted and are strong enough plants, herbs that remain in the containers as they are small and can be used for cooking and annuals.  Annual flowers are those that need to be planted every year.  Most of the blooming flowers that you see at garden shops are annuals.  Each year they live a long life throughout the spring and summer and die in the fall.  You have to plant new flowers the following year.

Perennial flowers, such as roses, are those that come back to life after the frost.  There are many perennial flowers that people put in their gardens but they are not usually put in containers.  Perennials get larger and grow stronger each year and need room to grow.  If you keep them in containers, you will end up stunting their growth.  There is an exception to this rule if this is your intention.  There are some flower varieties that are perennials that people purposely stunt.  Bonsai trees are another form of a plant that is used in container gardening that is purposely stunted and sculpted like a work of art.  Growing Bonsai trees, which are miniature trees in containers, is not for the beginning container gardener.
